About Mental Health Awareness Month 💚
Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM) has been observed in May in the United States since 1949. The month is observed with media, local events, and film screenings. Mental Health Awareness Month began in the United States in 1949 and was started by the Mental Health America organization
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health of people of all ages. It is critical to reduce the stigma around mental health challenges.
MHAM Event Calendar
💚 “Tuesday’s with Bubba” 3:15pm-4:00pm @ West Side Park
Join NAMI Champaign and Bubba for a socially distanced walk around the park! Bubba is a trained service-dog for Katie, one of our NAMI Champaign volunteers. Katie welcomes questions about Bubba, conversations about what it is like to have a service animal, and what it is like to live with a mental health condition. Bring your dogs, pets, and Masks!
Katie and Carolyn will be at West Side Park (400 W University Ave, Champaign, IL 61820), May 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th. Social distancing will be required due to COVID-19 guidelines.
💚 “GAME TIME” May 6th 7:00pm – 8:30pm – Over ZOOM
Stay Connected and have some fun! Virtual Game night is hosted by NAMI Champaign over the ZOOM platform. Open to everyone, play games like Pictionary, or come hangout and enjoy the company. RSVP email@example.com to get the Zoom Invite.
💚 NAMI Champaign County Business Meeting 6:30pm-8pm
NAMI Champaign County (IL) Business meetings are hosted the 2nd Monday of every month. Our meetings are open to anyone who wants to learn more about the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Champaign County Resources, and individuals interested in mental health. 💚 “Civil Commitment, Forced Meds, and Self-Advocacy with Advanced Directives”

Emma Dorantes of the IGAC’s Legal Advocacy Service will talk about the processes of involuntary civil commitment and forced psychotropic treatment under the Illinois Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Code. She will also explain the ways that different Advanced Directives such as a Power of Attorney for Healthcare and Declaration for Mental Health Treatment can protect the rights of an individual with mental illness, even during a crisis.
